Abstract

The rapid proliferation of digital devices among adolescents has led to alarming levels of gadget addiction and phubbing behavior in school environments. This study aims to systematically examine the role of school counselors in reducing gadget addiction and phubbing among students through group counseling services. Using a qualitative systematic literature review approach following the PRISMA protocol, this study analyzed 20 accredited national journal articles and one primary reference book published between 2019 and 2025, sourced from Garuda, SINTA, and Google Scholar databases. The findings reveal that gadget addiction manifests in multiple forms: social media addiction (68%), online game addiction (45%), phubbing (52%), and nomophobia (41%), with low self-control and permissive environments as primary contributing factors. Various group counseling techniques demonstrated significant effectiveness in reducing addiction, with behavior contract (48% reduction, d=1.89), self-management (45%, d=1.82), and motivational interviewing (44%, d=1.76) as the most effective approaches. School counselors play three strategic roles: program designer, process facilitator, and sustainability evaluator. The study concludes that group counseling serves as an evidence-based intervention for addressing digital addiction, with counselor competencies in empathy, systematic program design, and collaboration with parents as critical success factors.
